Mayor Eric Adams, the New York City mayor, is supporting surveillance tech that could potentially become the widest "gun surveillance" adoption system in the world after the Brooklyn subway mass shooting incident.

Brooklyn Subway Station Mass Shooting Saw 23 People Injured

After the Brooklyn subway mass shooting incident on Apr. 12 where 23 people were injured, as detailed in a report by the New York Times, talks regarding the installation of hundreds of gun surveillance tech in the city's subway stations have started to spread.

As per the WNYC radio station, Adams said that his office is now looking at gun sensing technologies that would not need individuals to empty their pockets. The mayor said that the system would see users walking normally through the system without the systems being too detectable.

New York City Mayor Looking to Launch Pilot Projects

The mayor said that the city is now looking to do a few pilot projects to see how the technology fully works. According to the story by Gizmodo, Adams is widely known for being supportive of facial recognition tech and other surveillance systems.

San Francisco, among other cities, has banned these types of technologies, with studies showing "similar policing systems can be unreliable and more than a little problematic." New York City's subway station is known as one of the largest in the world.

Security Cameras Gained Criticism During Recent Brooklyn Subway Attack

Numerous criticisms have been garnered over the crucial security camera during the recent attack. Janno Lieber, the Chair of the MTA, tried to dodge complaints regarding busted cameras after 600 cameras were in place when the alleged shooter entered the system.

Gizmodo notes that the MTA officials have not given additional details regarding the state's surveillance system. Lieber stated that they were looking at tech considered "invasive," saying they are not going to make it inconvenient and impractical.

Individuals Opting for Alternative Transportation Methods Due to Safety Concerns

No specifics were given by the mayor when it came to the specifics regarding the installation of the technology. Due to a shooting incident happening in Brooklyn's subway station, every single station would need this type of technology in order for effect to happen.

After the shooting incident, the subway saw a drop in ridership, with a number of individuals opting for other transportation methods due to safety concerns. Recently, Adams also announced that he wants the city schools to use the new gun sensing technology.

The ACLU has already criticized the New York City mayor for his moves aiming to end gun violence. Michael Sisitzky, the senior policy counter of the non-profit, said that Adam's policies would help stop the frisk policies that were widely used during the 90s and early 2000s.
