T-Mobile voice over 5G rolls out ahead of most of its rivals, allowing its customers to make phone calls away from the old 4G LTE network.

The giant carrier, T-Mobile, is trying to be ahead of the competition as it starts making voice over 5G available to a select number of users before it becomes the new norm.

It has been a few years since 5G support started showing up on the latest flagship smartphones, such as the iPhone 12 series and the Samsung Galaxy S10, which are some of the first 5G-ready mobile devices out there.

However, the full-blown rollout of 5G, to the same extent as to how the LTE spectrum has already been achieved, has yet to take place.

While 5G connection is already available in most locations, voice-over, or VoNR for short, still widely relies on LTE, as per a news story by The Verge.

T-Mobile Voice Over 5G

That said, T-Mobile is not waiting any longer to begin shifting voice-over from LTE to next-generation connectivity, 5G.

It is an attempt to move away from using the already crowded LTE network for phone calls in favor of 5G data.

The Verge notes that even in areas where 5G connection is already widely available, phone calls still opt to use the good ol' LTE.

Essentially, the shift to the new-generation data connection should, later on, help the whole 4G spectrum to somewhat be less crowded, bringing faster connection in the long run.

According to a recent report by CNET, the vice president of device engineering and technology labs of T-Mobile, Grant Castle, describes why it started rolling out 5G voice calls.

The T-Mobile exec said: "we're trying to create this big, broad, capable network and figure out what people want to do with it."

Castle also notes that they also focus on the use cases and where the demand is for 5G.

5G Voice Calls

CNET says that 5G voice calls would not offer any noticeably impressive voice quality that T-Mobile customers might notice. It should relatively be the same as what 4G offers, at least in terms of the overall quality.

Perhaps the most noteworthy benefit that the new 5G voice calls bring is, T-Mobile says, the faster connection when trying to call someone.

The giant carrier says that going away from 4G LTE should ditch the unnecessary delays after dialing a number before it starts ringing.
