Instagram's age verification tool will now analyze users' age through artificial intelligence. This has sparked some debate between Meta and lawmakers since some users just pretend to be older just to use this social media app.

The company has three age verification techniques to use in order to check your real age. Here's how they work.

Instagram Age Verification Method

You can now upload your ID, take a video selfie, or ask your mutual followers to vouch for you to verify your age on Instagram.

It's quite hard for Meta to detect each age of users on Instagram since it's very easy to trick the system. All you have to do is input your birthdate and ensure it's 18 years old and above. However, some underage users are not filtered, and this poses some danger to the teens.

9to5Mac spotted a previous study that tackles Instagram users worldwide. Based on the 2021 research, users below 13, which account for 40%, were found to be utilizing the social media app.

Because of this, many parents and policymakers called out the tech giant to solve this issue. As a matter of fact, Meta has now added birthdate as a requirement when creating an IG account.

Additionally, there are cases where minors who use Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat became a victim of cyberbullying, unwanted interaction, and even abusive DMs from strangers.

Using AI to Verify Age

The power of artificial intelligence has already gone so far since it can help (or ruin) a particular industry.

As for Instagram's part, collaborating with Yoti will improve its AI-based age verification tool. The latter has trained its AI to recognize different faces from various people. The data collected by Yoti is also safe since it can be deleted anytime.

Of course, Yoti should first seek consent from the parents regarding this process, especially if the user is still a minor.

The said AI boasts an accuracy rate of 2.96 years for a group of people aged 6 to 70 years old. Moreover, Yoti guarantees that it will minimize potential bias for the person's gender and skin tone, per Mashable.

How to Verify Your Age on Instagram

Instagram cited three ways to verify the user's age-- ID, video selfie, and social vouching.

The first one is self-explanatory. All you have to do is to upload your ID to the platform, and the AI will not check if it matches your data.

The second option will require you to upload a video selfie for age verification purposes. Once you take a short clip, you need to share the picture with Yoti. The AI will check your facial features and give an estimate of your age.

After the verification process is finished, the image will be deleted immediately. It should be noted that the AI won't recognize other details about you. It's only used to check your age.

The last technique is through social vouching. This means that you will need some help from your friends or followers. You will choose three people to vouch for you to see if you're really 18 years old and above.

The select persons will be given three days, and it will start from the moment they receive a confirmation request for age verification.
