Spotify is adding a desktop feature to mobile, which allows users to see the music activity of their friends. The music app is now adding the Friend Activity sidebar to its mobile version.
The Importance of Finding Out What Friends are Listening to
Being able to know what certain friends are listening to is an interesting feature that allows users to discover new music or at least become updated on what new music their friends are listening to. Spotify prides itself not only as a way for users to listen to the music they like but also as a place where users can discover new music.
When discovering new music, some people have friends with really unique music tastes. Instead of having to ask for their playlist every time, the Friend Activity sidebar allows them to check out the list of songs that their friends are listening to right away.
Spotify Adds Feature Similar to 'Friend Activity' Sidebar
According to the story by Tech Radar, music fans have long been asking the company to bring the Spotify Friend Activity sidebar feature to mobile in order for them to remain updated regarding their friends' music choices. After the requests started to pile up, the company finally listened to them and is adding the feature to mobile.
The new feature will allow users to see what their Spotify friends or Facebook contacts are listening to. This feature has never been available on either the Android or iOS version of the app for mobile users.
Addition of the 'Community' Tab for Mobile Devices
The feature was reportedly spotted by Chris Messina, a Hashtag inventor, and all-around tech icon, and posted his findings on Twitter to show how Spotify is testing out a new "Community" tab for mobile devices.
Although the name is different, the feature functioned almost the same as Friend Activity wherein users would be able to see what their friends are listening to. Users will also be able to see what their Facebook friends are listening to with the help of the new feature.

How to Check Out the New Feature
As per an article by Tech Crunch, although there were people that wanted to have the Friend Activity feature on mobile, the company decided to shut down its plans to add the feature in 2019 as a result of votes on its community forum.
Despite the previous decision, however, it seems like Spotify has decided to still abide by the decision but offer a similar feature called "Community." Although technically not adding a Friend Activity feature, the two features function almost in the same way.
Although still unavailable on the app's surface, Tech Crunch notes that users can still check out the Community feature by searching for "spotify:community" in their Safari browser for iOS users.
