The second-gen portable DC fast charger will bring significant improvements and versatility that will provide up to five charging ports without the need for construction and installations.

Lightning eMotors debuted its first generation portable DC charger in 2020, and it was designed to be used in a vehicle or trailer to make it mobile. Today, the next-generation portable DC charger is smaller and more modular that can deliver a higher capacity on the go.

Significant Improvements

One of the most noticeable improvements on the second-generation charger is that it is more compact and is now mobile. Therefore, it can be towed instead of having to be installed into a trailer or vehicle.

According to a press release, every 2nd-gen modular unit can provide between 105 and 420 kWh of battery capacity and the option for up to 5 DC fast-charging outputs.

It also has the same advanced technologies as Lightning's powertrains, scubas active thermal management for optimum battery performance, telematics, and analytics that can optimize fleet operations and vehicle safety.

CEO Tim Reeser spoke about the next-gen mobile chargers and said that they are very excited to be bringing a new charging solution to the market. The chargers will help address the growing need for mobile and flexible DC fast-charging.

The new systems will be available to order as fleet purchases of lease/rental agreements. While the deliveries will be expected to start later this year.

AMPLY Power also announced its new partnership with Lightning motors. With that, Lightning eMotors' future EVs will feature AMPLY's OMEGA charge management software. This will help optimize EV charging by monitoring factors, such as low-cost energy windows and vehicle availability, while responding in real-time without the need for active fleet management.

EV Chargers On the Rise

Many companies are installing EV chargers all over the world today, and it's also because of the rise of EVs on the roads. Recently, a New Zealand-based company, Invisible Urban Charging, announced its plans to install more than 6,000 electric vehicle chargers in Florida in the coming months. The chargers will be installed at commercial sites, parking lots, and other developments, as reported by ABC News.

With the many electric chargers being developed and installed, it is pushing more people to switch to EVs. At the same time, these companies provide local jobs, improve air quality, reduce oil dependence, and also, contributing to the fight against climate change impacts.
