Apple's Apple Pay options have landed the company into hot water numerous times before but the company is expanding its offerings regarding payment methods. The new decision notes that browsers might soon be able to support the Apple Pay payment method.

Apple Pay Support Could Come to Other Browsers

According to the story by GizChina, Apple is usually strict regarding its business and its association with others. It was noted that the company usually prefers a closed system leaving users within the Apple ecosystem.

There are usually significant restrictions whenever users try to collaborate with some other outside services from the Apple ecosystem. For this reason, the company has met numerous lawsuits in different countries.

iOS 16 Seeks to Increase Support for Apple Pay Outside Safari

As per Steve Moser of MacRumors, the iOS 16 beta sees Apple Pay work with Edge and Chrome. He also noted that he assumes that this would also include third-party browsers and it was also noted that iOS 15 only supports Apple Pay on Safari.

 

As per GizChina, Apple Pay could be supported in browsers like Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox browsers. Moser was able to discover that both Edge and Chrome browsers supported Apple Pay on the iOS 16 Developer Preview Beta 4.

Apple Said to be Working on Different Improvements for the Apple Pay and Apple Fitness +

Moser also noted that Apple Pay did not lift any restrictions ever since the macOS beta. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reported in a newsletter that Apple is planning to make numerous improvements not just to Apple Pay but also to Apple Fitness + some time this year.

The company is even looking at different options that will provide a brand new grocery service that "integrates with health apps." In the Power On newsletter, as per Gurman, Apple is now developing two different financial-related services.

iOS 16 Beta 2 Sees Apple Pay Supported on Firefox

According to The Verge, a Reddit post from earlier shows the Apple Pay option in the iOS 16 beta 2 through using Firefox. The publication notes that they are not certain regarding when the company plans to expand its Apple Pay support to different browsers.

The reason why Apple Pay is not yet available in the latest macOS beta is that Chrome, Edge, and Firefox are still all using the rendering engine by Safari called WebKit. Third-party browsers, however, are still free to "use their own engines on macOS."

The European Union Plans to Crack Down on 'Big Tech Anti-Competitive Practices'

As per the publication, the decision to change different aspects of its iOS could be related to the European Union's plan to crack down on certain "big tech anti-competitive practices." The Digital Markets Act is expected to go into official effect in the Spring of 2023.

The Digital Markets Act imposes a number of rules on certain companies like Meta, Google, and of course Apple in order to help promote competition along with certain smaller entities.
