A 54-year-old man from Norfolk, UK, praised the Apple Watch that his wife gave him earlier this year for saving his life after his heart stopped 138 times in 48 hours.

Apple Watch Saves a Man's Life

According to 9to5Mac, the Apple Watch owner, David Last, began wearing the Apple Watch that his wife gave him for his birthday.

He noticed that Apple Watch's electrocardiogram or ECG feature started giving him abnormally low heart rate warnings, with measurements as low as 30 beats per minute recorded 3,000 different times.

The measurements were alarming because, for an adult male, the average resting heart rate is usually 60 to 100bpm.

Last thought that his Apple Watch was defective, and he told The Independent that his family has no history of heart complications, but his wife insisted they see a doctor.

In July, David Last received the results of his MRI scan, and his medical consultant gave him a 48-hour ECG to monitor his heart rate.

He realized that there was a problem when the hospital called him for a thorough check-up. The doctors told him he had a third-degree heart blockage because a junction in his heart was wearing away, which could result in sudden cardiac death.

When he was laid on a hospital bed, his heart stopped 138 times in 10-second intervals over 48 hours, mostly happening during his sleep.

In August, Last received heart surgery, and a pacemaker was attached to him to detect abnormal rhythms and help each heart ventricle pump blood in sync.

Other Apple Watch Stories

In 2021, a woman's Apple Watch saved her life after the wearable device alerted her of her abnormally low heart rate.

After she got herself checked at the hospital, it was revealed that she was suffering from a serious heart condition.

According to TechTimes, the 68-year-old Patti Sohn from Oakville, Missouri, said she began wearing an Apple Watch after her son gave it to her as a gift.

Sohn said she is living a healthy lifestyle, which was why she was surprised that the watch buzzed on her wrist and warned her that her heart rate had been below 43 for 10 minutes.

Sohn told KSDK that she double-checked the reading on the blood pressure monitor. When she saw that her heart rate was between 39 and 40bpm, she went to the Missouri Baptist Medical Center and was admitted to the advanced cardiac care unit.

According to Sohn, she was on 24/7 monitoring until her heart converted back to the normal heart rate.

Following her hospital admission, Sohn discovered she had a second-degree atrioventricular block. This heart condition will require her to use a pacemaker to help control her heartbeat.

Sohn said that without the Apple Watch that her son gave her, she wouldn't have known about her heart condition.

Apple's ECG Feature

In 2018, Apple released the ECG feature to help people monitor their heart rate. The electrical sensor used for taking ECG is available on Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 6, and Apple Watch Series 7.

According to Pocket-Lint, the ECG app in Apple Watches is available in the US, Chile, the UK, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, and 19 countries in Europe.
