FBI Warns Against Hackers Targeting Healthcare Firms

As per the latest news story by Bleeping Computer, the FBI disclosed that the cyberattacks targeting healthcare firms reached an alarming level, wherein hackers have already stolen millions of dollars.

And as such, the Bureau highlights in its latest alert that hackers have been using publicly available personal details in their social engineering schemes to access the payment information of healthcare firms.

These hackers targeting healthcare companies are impersonating their victims to gain access to the portals of these firms, exposing the personal and payment information of their customers.

So it appears that cybercriminals these days are looking to impersonate employees of these health-related firms in their attempt to gain access to numerous payment information.

In turn, these hackers steal money from these payment systems by sending them to bank accounts that these cyber attackers have taken over.

The FBI also notes the extent of the healthcare company hacking nowadays in its latest alert.

In fact, Bleeping Computer reports that the stolen money has already reached a whopping $4.6 million this year alone.

The FBI highlighted three massive hacking incidents of healthcare firms this 2022, including one in April and two in February.

BERLIN, GERMANY - JANUARY 25: In this photo illustration a young man types on an illuminated computer keyboard typically favored by computer coders on January 25, 2021 in Berlin, Germany. 2020 saw a sharp rise in global cybercrime that was in part driven by the jump in online retailing that ensued during national lockdowns as governments sought to rein in the coronavirus pandemic.

Last April, United States law enforcement said that a healthcare firm with roughly 175 medical providers lost a staggering $840,000 after cybercriminals had successfully hacked their systems.

And on top of that, the FBI also revealed an incident that occurred last February, wherein a "major" healthcare firm lost a whopping $3.1 million. It comes after hackers have taken over its payment systems and sent millions of dollars to a checking bank account apparently controlled by the cybercriminals.

In the same month, another massive hacking took place. But this time, the attackers have stolen about $700,000 from another healthcare firm. And it turns out that the hackers used the same method as the previous $3.1 million heist.

Besides these incidents this year, the FBI alert revealed that hackers have stolen from several US health payment processors in the past two years. To be more precise, the warning states that between June 2018 and January 2019, various attackers have taken over around 65 firms in the country.
