Ukraine faced a disastrous attack from Russia as the hostile forces attacked the Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear power plant in the southern Mykolaiv region, but missed the reactors by 300 meters. Should the alleged Russian attack have been successful, it would have resulted in a grave nuclear disaster that would bring a humongous problem to the world.

TOPSHOT - This photo taken on September 11, 2022 shows a security person standing in front of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar (Energodar), Zaporizhzhia Oblast, amid the ongoing Russian military action in Ukraine. - The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in southeastern Ukraine is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and among the 10 largest in the world.

Ukraine's state nuclear company, Energoatom released photos regarding the alleged Russian attack which bombed the proximity of the Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear power plant earlier on Monday. The attacks were missed by only 300 meters, and in turn, they damaged a nearby hydroelectric power plant and some transmission lines.

Energoatom said in its news release that "A powerful explosion occurred just 300 m from the SUNPP reactors. The shock wave damaged the NPP buildings as well as over 100 windows were broken."

According to Reuters, the state nuclear company published photos of the craters where the bombs hit near the plant, but missed the facility and did not harm any employees during the attack.

Nuclear Reactors Missed, Crisis Averted for Now

The nuclear reactors were missed by the bombing by 300 meters and "all three SUNPP power units are operating in a normal mode." It is a crisis averted for Ukraine and the world now, especially as the recent bombings failed to achieve its goals to destroy the nuclear facility.

However, it does not mean that targetting nuclear facilities in the country is over now, as Energoatom's chief, Petro Kotin, claimed that Russia is trying to "steal" its power plants.

Nuclear Power in the World

Many still believe in nuclear power plants to be the next-generation energy source in the world, with many efforts towards developing and sustaining power for all. However, one of its cons is its possible destructive capabilities and radiation, something which is too delicate to handle and brings significant danger to all.

In the past, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station saw significant attacks from Russian forces which dropped bombs and missiles near its location. It is revered as Europe's largest nuclear power plant in the region, and there were massive concerns regarding the attacks, saying it is "suicidal" to bring destructive forces near the power stations.

Nuclear power is still one of the most potent sources, as well as the most unstable in the world, and it should be handled with care. Otherwise, another Chernobyl would occur here.

Ukraine is already doing its best to protect its nuclear power plants from the many alleged Russian attacks against it, especially with the shell drops which aim to significantly damage it. However, it is not only the Ukrainians who are in danger due to this, as the whole world would suffer from here on out.
