5G services on mobile phones were successfully launched in India during the 2022 India Mobile Congress (IMC) held in New Delhi on Saturday.

The inauguration of 5G connectivity in the country was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the presence of tech industry giants Sunil Bharti Mittal, Mukesh Ambani, and Kumar Mangalam Birla.

Bharti Airtel

Airtel is now offering its 5G plans to its users in eight cities. The city names were not announced, but metro cities like Mumbai and Delhi are presumed to be included.

The telecom company aims to finish bringing 5G connections to all cities across India by March 2024.

Other network providers, such as Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi), are expected to follow suit in the next few days.

Reliance Jio Infocomm

Telecom player Jio is set to start offering its 5G service by the same date of Diwali in India, which is around October 22 to 26. It will be available in four key cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai.

Additional cities will experience the super-speed internet connection in a phased-out manner around December 2023. To do so, the company plans to invest in RS 2 Lakh Crore for the rapid rollout.

Jio founder Mukesh Ambani believes that people outside the largest cities have the same privileges to use the technology. "5G cannot remain an exclusive service, available only to the privileged few or only to those in our largest cities," he stated.

Vodafone Idea (VI)

VI did not mention any announcement related to its 5G connectivity during the IMC 2022, but it reassured that it would be soon available. With this, VI users most likely need to wait a little longer for the 5G reception to be on the market.

How to Use 5G on Mobile Phones

It's paramount to find out if the 5G network is already serviceable in your area. Make sure that your device supports 5G, as well, offered by the telecom companies.

If 5G works in your area, go to Settings on your phone, then click the Mobile Network option. Select the network operator based on which you want to enable the 5G connection.

Choose between Sim 1 and Sim 2, then scroll down to get to the Preferred Network Type tab.

Now, enable the option 5G/4G/3G/2G (Auto). This way, your phone will detect the 5G network as its default data connectivity.

Finally, restart your device, so it can start finding the 5G connection and using it for your data consumption.

Take note that these steps on allowing the 5G service on your mobile phone may depend on its maker.

There might be a time when you must update your phone's operating system. You can check your phone's settings to see if it has a pending update recommendation.
