A woman checks her Instagram account as she stands on a street in New York city on October 4, 2021. - Facebook and its Instagram and WhatsApp platforms were hit by a massive outage, impacting potentially tens of millions of people as users flocked to other networks to sound off.

Once users open the app by tapping the icon, only the launch screen will appear for roughly two seconds and continue to crash.

The bug has now been fixed, according to a spokesperson from Meta and it did not affect a large number of users. Yet, no reasons were given by the platform regarding the bug. According to HITC, some users tagged the official account of Meta and Instagram on Twitter, yet the company did not address anything during the downtime.

Speculated Causes

NotebookCheck reported that the bug occurred when the v255.0 update was rolled out, hence this could be the reason for the bug. The report also stated that some users who are still currently in iOS15 could run the app smoothly with no problems.

Users tried to reboot the phone, but it did not fix anything. Meanwhile, some users re-installed the applications; fortunately, this method worked for them.

May this year when the platform experienced down to its server. The only difference from the bug now is that the previous one affected a lot of users. Users only saw their feed but could not fully access its content.

Some users experienced the display that said, "Welcome to Instagram," but no pictures, stories, and Reels were loading during that time. The problem did not resolve in a fast manner. While some users have already reported that their service is back on, some still suffer from the outage.

The problem was known as an "intermittent outage," which lasted for several hours as per the report from Instagram via Down Detector

Instagram iOS Default Sounds on Stories

iOS users have been frustrated as the sound of Instagram Stories automatically turns on. In fact, a Newsweek report stated that many users are searching on Google for "How to turn off Instagram Stories sound?" The search increased by around 300%.

Meta heard the users' complaints and fixed the issue right away by deciding to revert the default sound last month. This new update allows iPhone users to enjoy the feature with a quiet experience. The report also said that this might not be a bug but an effort by Meta to make their feature more consistent as the company transitions to becoming a discovery engine app.
