Google Meet, a video-communicating service by Google Workspace, is releasing the latest update on its software wherein users will finally get an automatic transcription of the meetings on the app.

What's New

This update on Workspace, announced via the company's official blog post, might be especially useful for those whose jobs require them to take notes during meetings.

As of now, Google Meet recordings may be saved as videos only, but sooner, these video files will come with automated transcriptions of the sessions in a Google Doc format.

This feature will be made available in English starting this week. Meanwhile, language support for French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese will launch next year.

More Upcoming Updates

Google announced more helpful Meet features that will become available in the coming weeks and at the beginning of 2023.

Assigning conference rooms as breakout rooms in Meet is set to roll out this week. This will manage logistics for in-room guests.

Another update for this week is controlling slides directly within Meet. This will improve presenters' confidence by letting them keep an eye on both their audience and their material.

Before joining a call, Google Meet users will soon be able to make use of a new feature that will automatically center them in the frame of their video tile. They will have the ability to redefine themselves manually at any point in time. This update is scheduled for release later this month.

There will be a function that allows the speaker's video to be placed directly within their content. The private preview begins later this year.

Available early next year, the one labeled "meeting room check-in" will allow everyone to see a list of all attendees, an upgrade that has been overdue for quite some time. Additionally, the names of numerous individuals who are joining a call from the same physical conference room will be shown there.

There are also the upcoming AI-powered cameras from Huddly and Logitech to be launched to make everyone in the conference room be viewed clearly.

The second-screen Companion Mode functionality is making its way to mobile devices in addition to the web, Nest Hub Max, and gadgets dedicated to the software. While users are on a call using their computer or tablet, they will have the ability to "virtually raise their hand," interact with other call participants and ask questions using their mobile phone.

Recently Added Features and Updates

In September, Google launched the push-to-talk function on Meet software, enabling users to mute and unmute in just one click during the sessions. To activate the function, go to the platform's settings, as it is not enabled by default in the update.

Google also announced upgrades to its other platforms, including Calendar's new OAuth 2.0 authentication, Sheets' expanded functionality, Drive's visitor connection, and collaboration features, and Gmail's space-joining feature.
