5G in India

A report from TechCrunch stated that Apple, Google, and Samsung have agreed to roll out software updates that allow 5G support devices to function in India. This agreement came from the Indian Government's request to several phone makers (including the three mentioned) to expedite updates.

Carriers from India like Reliance Jio and Airtel have already started to offer 5G services in several cities in the country but as per the government's request, popular mobile phones in the country still do not support the latest kind of network.

News 18 reported last month that Airtel just rolled out to its customers the 5G services for cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and more. According to the report, urban areas in the country will also be included in the roll out by the end of 2023.

India is one of the last major markets to adopt the 5G services after Billionaire Mukesh Ambani committed to spending $25 billion for this to roll out and broaden its services. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the availability of the service is the beginning of infinite opportunities.

Government's Request

Based on a report by Reuters, top bureaucrats and IT departments have gathered for a meeting on October 12th regarding the 5G adoption. As per the government's request, smartphone executives and domestic telecom operators should be present at the meeting to discuss the prioritization and releasing software upgrades.

Tech Giants' Response

Rolling out updates will start by December to adopt the high-speed network, as per Apple. MacRumors reported that only recent models will be having the software updates such as iPhone 14 series, 13 series, 12 series, and the iPhone SE.

Google has also released a statement and said that there is still no specific time frame for the rollout but promises its users a software update for its devices. The company added that "Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and Pixel 6a are 5G capable devices. We are actively working with the Indian carriers to enable functionality at the earliest."

Samsung also confirmed that the company will be working for an upgrade to enable local airwaves. The tech giant is the second-largest smartphone vendor in the country. They stated, "Samsung has the widest portfolio of 5G devices. We are working closely with our operator partners and are committed to rolling out OTA updates across all our 5G devices by mid-November 2022, enabling Indian consumers to experience 5G seamlessly."
