TeraWatt Infrastructure has announced the development of the first network of electric-vehicle charging centers for heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks on the Interstate 10 highway that stretches from Long Beach, California to El Paso in Texas, as reported by CNBC.

King Willem-Alexander (R) prepares to charge an electric truck during the opening of the Elaad Testlab for electric vehicles and the associated charging infrastructure in Arnhem, on June 8, 2022.

The facilities will be located about 150 miles apart and less than a mile from the nearest highway exits across New Mexico, California, and Arizona.

Despite the limited number of electric long-haul trucks on the road, it's likely that they will come sooner and the need for a charging infrastructure as early as now is an excellent move.

The Charging Centers

The charging centers will have dozens of direct current fast chargers, pull-through charging stalls, and on-site driver amenities for long-haul and local electric-trucking operations. According to TeraWatt, the first sites will be online in 2023.

The announcement followed President Joe Biden's administration rolled out a plan to fund $5 billion to states for EV chargers along interstate highways as part of the bipartisan infrastructure package.

In addition, the Biden administration has set a target for EVs to make up half of all new vehicle sales by 2030. They also pledged to replace their federal fleet with electric power by 2035.

More Electric Trucks On the Road

What does this mean for electric trucking? The biggest implication is that there are more trucking companies that are considering electric trucks for long-haul fleet. is the industry's first lead from an infrastructure perspective, and let's hope that it's the start of a trend. We also expect more charging stations to be developed by other EV infrastructure companies as they see the trend developing.

As a result, electric trucking companies will be able to get lower charging rates and a wider network of charging stations. The availability of charging stations is one of the biggest hurdles for electric trucks. While charging station are still very few, this news is a start.

Charging Is Still the Big Hurdle

Another issue is that there are not enough charging stations for long-haul trucks. Most of the charging stations are available for cars, and none of them are designed for large trucks. Because of the size of the truck, many charging stations do not have enough space or power to charge a full size truck.

The effort to create charging stations for heavy duty trucks can be a great opportunity for EV charging station companies.

It's possible that with the rising demand for electric trucks, there will be more regulations regarding charging. We will see some regulations such as requiring a certain number of charging stations at every truck stop.
