Huawei is teasing what looks like satellite communication capabilities for its upcoming smartphone. The smartphone to receive this particular feature is the Huawei Mate Xs 2.

Huawei Dropped a Video Teasing Its New Satellite Communications Feature

According to the story by Pocket Lint, Huawei is teasing its satellite communication features with an official announcement expected to launch soon. The announcement would reveal what the feature might do and how it might work.

The teaser came in the form of both a YouTube video and the Huawei Weibo page. An official video was uploaded to HUAWEI Devices with the title "HUAWEI Mate Xs 2 - Satellite communications."

The 33-Second Video Showed How Users Could Use the Feature Out of Nowhere

The 33-second video shows viewers how the Mate Xs 2 will help them communicate with the world despite being in the middle of nowhere. This is also something that Apple announced along with its September unveiling of the iPhone 14.

The Feature Will Allow People to Send Short Messages Through Satellite Even Without Access to Wi-Fi or Cellular Towers

The article by Pocket Lint notes that the gist looks to be very similar in nature. The feature will reportedly allow people to send short messages through satellite when they no longer have access to Wi-Fi or even cellular towers.

This is a feature that is specifically designed to be used in emergency situations where  people would have to utilize built-in software in order to get line-of-sight with a satellite for them to send a message. If they aren't able to do this, the feature won't work.

Apple's iPhones' Satellite Comms Will Rely on the Globalstar Satellites

As per Huawei, they will be using the Beidou satellites in order to enable this brand new feature. When it comes to Apple's iPhones, they are using a different type of satellites, the Globalstar satellites.

The article notes that more information can be expected regarding the new feature on November 5. Upon that date, Huawei is expected to hold a special developer conference in China where it will officially be making its announcement regarding the new feature.

Huawei Mate Xs 2 to be the First Foldable Smartphone with the Satellite Comms Feature

The upcoming Huawei Mate Xs 2 will become the first foldable smartphone to come with this feature. So far, no other foldable smartphone is capable of supporting satellite emergency communications.

However, the article by Pocket Lint explains that it would be hard for them to feel comfortable using a foldable phone on the top of the mountain or in the wilderness. Since the smartphone has not yet launched, a lot remains unknown regarding its resistance or durability.

For something to be used in situations that require satellite connection, it should at least provide the user with a sense of durability. So far, buyers will have to wait for the official announcement to find out just how durable the upcoming Huawei Mate Xs 2 really is.
