After Elon Musk recently acquired Twitter for a whopping $44 billion, the CEO has taken different measures to improve the platform. One of these decisions includes permanently suspending impersonator accounts.

Elon Musk Announced that Twitter Will be Taking Action Against Impersonation Accounts

According to the story by AP News, Elon Musk recently announced that impersonation accounts would be permanently suspended from the platform. The CEO also warned celebrities that change their Twitter display names, not account names, and tried to tweet as "Elon Musk."

The celebrities changed their Twitter display name to "Elon Musk" in reaction after he decided to change the structure of verified accounts. Twitter will charge $8 per month for those who want to verify their accounts.

Impersonator Accounts that Do Not Specify as a 'Parody' Will be Permanently Suspended from Twitter

Elon Musk's tweet noted that Twitter will permanently suspend impersonating accounts that do not specify "parody." He also had a follow-up tweet saying in the past, they issued a warning before they would suspend an account.

A Warning was Given Saying that Those that Change Their Name will Temporarily Lose Their Verified Checkmark Status

However, since they will be rolling out widespread verification, they will no longer be able to give a warning. The new condition will be identified for signing up to Twitter Blue, and any name change will temporarily cause the account to lose its verified checkmark status.

Valerie Bertinelli Reminds About the Original Purpose of the Twitter Verification Checkmark

The comedian Kathy Griffin's account was recently suspended for switching her screen name to "Musk." The same happened to actress Valerie Bertinelli, but she switched back to her original Twitter name before explaining.

Bertinelli noted that the blue verification checkmark was free for certain individuals that Twitter employees identified as their true identities before the switch. Journalists account for a large portion of the recipients.

No News Regarding When the Upcoming Service is Expected to Launch

Bertinelli noted that having the blue verification checkmark meant that the account's identity was verified, making it harder for scammers to impersonate the person. She added that since it no longer applies, "Good luck out there!"

The service would be initially available in the US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. There was no additional information regarding when the new rules would go live.
