FromSoftware announces the relaunch of the Dark Souls: Remastered online PC servers after almost a year-long shutdown.

Dark Souls is an action role-playing game set in a dark fantasy universe that features intense dungeon exploration, action fights with terrifying enemies, and innovative online features for a unique gaming experience. However, earlier this year, the fantasy game's online servers for PC were shut down, according to EuroGamer.

The Dark Souls' official Twitter reveals that online features for the remastered PC version have been reactivated as of Nov. 9.

What Does This Mean for Dark Souls PC Players?

A key part of the Dark Souls experience is going on invasions, summoning, and online messages. With the return of Dark Souls Remastered to online servers, players can now access features such as Player versus Player mode (PvP), Player versus environment (PvE), Multiplayer co-op mode, and more.

However, despite the relaunch of most of the Dark Souls franchise games, a statement from the game developers in reply to their Tweet thread revealed that the original port for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die will not be restored due to "an aging system," according to IGN.

"We have determined that we will not be able to support online services for the PC version of Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition that was released in 2012, due to an aging system," According to the Tweet announcement. "We apologize for the long wait and ask for your understanding in this matter."

However, the downtime of the PC servers will not affect PvP servers for Xbox and PlayStation consoles.

What Caused the Dark Souls' PC Servers to Shut Down?

Back in January, Gamespot reported that FromSoftware shut down the online servers for the whole Dark Souls franchise after alarming reports of hackers taking over opponents' computers through the Dark Souls server.

The Remote Code Execution (RCE) exploit was first discovered in Reddit threads, revealing that the servers could let PC hackers "run arbitrary code on your machine without permission", according to a past report by IGN.

The potential security breach was further demonstrated by Dark Souls streamer The Grim Sleeper, causing Dark Souls publisher Bandai Namco to shut down the servers for almost a year, disabling the online experience for PC players.

Luckily, the Dark Souls' issue was revealed before the release of Elden Ring in February, which allowed time for FromSoftware to tighten some loose screws before launching the game.

However, despite the long wait for players, the Dark Souls official Twitter continuously updated fans with their status while working on a solution to bring back the online servers. FromSoftware now confirms that it has completed its security vulnerability investigation and countermeasures for Dark Souls: RemasteredDark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3, which have all been recovered this year.

Dark Souls: Remastered is currently available to purchase on Steam.
