How the Apple Watch Saved a 17-Year-old Boy From a Fall

In a report from India Today, 17-year Smit Metha recalls an adventure trip gone wrong with his three friends on July 11.

During the trip, the group went for a trek near Lonavala, a hill located in Maharashtra, India. Despite successfully reaching the fort of the hill, Metha noted that it had been raining heavily at the time, which eventually led to his unfortunate incident.

"That day it was heavily raining. The trek went well. We reached the fort and clicked photos, and were on the way back. But, on our way back, at the end of the trek, due to heavy rain, I slipped, and I fell down into the valley," Mehta recalled.

Mehta had reportedly slipped and took a tumble around 130 to 150 meters down into the valley. Since the slope was heavily lined with trees, his three friends could not spot Mehta. Fortunately, the teen had broken his fall by getting stuck in a tree. However, both of his ankles had been dislocated.

While stuck in the wilderness without his phone, which happened to be with his friends at the time, Mehta found that his Apple Watch was still connected to his Jio network and was able to contact his friends and get help through the watch's call functions.

"I think I'm alive because of the Cellular Apple Watch model I own. That let me connect with my family and friends at the right time, without the need for a phone," Mehta expressed on his Apple Watch.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Wishes Mehta a 'Speedy Recovery'

When the Apple Watch was introduced in September 2014, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that it would be the most personal device that Apple has ever created. Cook's statement has proven true in many lifesaving Apple Watch stories, including Mehta's incident.

Mashable reports that while Mehta was recovering in the hospital, he had sent his gratitude and story to Tim Cook in an email. To his surprise, the tech giant CEO had responded to his story.

"I am so glad you are on the road to recovery," Cook wrote as a response.
