Discord Expands Subscription Plans

In an announcement made by the creator product lead, Discord will be expanding its subscription plans for creators to earn more than usual. Creators will now be able to start charging subscription fees worth $3 to $200 both for premium access and some perks.

90% of the earned money will proceed to the creators, as per the announcement of Discord on their official blog. Discord Creator Product Lead Derek Yang said that it is totally up to creators and community leaders on how will they use the expanded services.

He added, "Whether it's a Discord server dedicated to the work of a certain content creator or a community that gathers around a particular topic, these server owners take their time to facilitate conversation, connection, and creativity in their environments. Now, it's time to support them back."

This was tested by developers over the last year, as it was specifically made for creators and community leaders to make and earn money directly on the platform where the creators provide exclusive experiences that can only be availed by their paying subscribers.

Three extra tiers were introduced by Discord and these are:

  • Tier 1 ($2.99) - exclusive monthly video, unlocks access to some features
  • Tier 2 ($4.99) - everything from Tier 1, includes exclusive voting rights on polls, early access to merchandise
  • Tier 3 ($9.99) - everything from Tier 1 and 2, granted access to behind the scenes content

Eligible Creators

Based on a report from The Verge, these servers can only be enabled if certain creators have met these minimum criteria: (1) 18 years or older, (2) Have a good standing account, (3) Verified email address and phone number, and (4) Enabled two-factor authentication.

Discord also made it clear that there will be no minimum community size for monetization eligibility.

90/10 Revenue

Compared to Twitch's 50/50 revenue share, Bloomberg reported that Discord's offerings are much better for the creators with a revenue share of 90% proceeding to the creators and only 10% to the company.

However, it will take some time to get your money with Discord. Users will be paid out 30 days after the end of the calendar month, which will not give them access on seeing the amount of money they have earned for January until March 1st.

At least $100 must also be accumulated by the creator to get their first payout, with $25 earned for each monthly payout.
