Steam Deck Upgrades: Valve Plans to Improve Screen and Battery

It is one heck of a ride for the gaming firm, Valve, this 2022. Its first-ever handheld gaming computer debuted early this year.

And several months have passed by, and it is still the top-selling item on the online storefront of Steam, as per the news story by The Verge. In fact, the handheld PC has been at the top of the best-selling ranking for quite a while now - 30 weeks to be more exact.

Given that, while the Steam Deck is not at all perfect, it sure is popular with gamers. And as such, Valve is already thinking about its next generation, including the things that need to be improved and other new offerings.

After all, according to a recent report by Kotaku, the gaming firm says the handheld is a "multi-generation product." So we should expect more iterations of the Steam Deck in the future. And it seems that now is only the start.

All that said, the designers of the handheld PC blurted out some of their plans for its future version, aptly called the Steam Deck 2.

The designers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Lawrence Yang spilled in their interview with The Verge what Steam Deck fans could expect.

The news outlet asked the designers what they want to improve for the second generation of the handheld. Griffais and Yang gamely answered the question, saying that they want to address issues with its screen and battery life.

Steam Deck Battery and Screen Problems

Kotaku notes in its report that the battery of the Steam Deck drains quickly. And not only that, but it is also hard to repair. Not to mention that its screen also needs a dire improvement in terms of serviceability.

With that, it is somewhat reassuring that the folks behind the handheld are looking into these weaknesses.

For now, the battery performance is somewhat of a deal breaker for some users as it limits them from playing games while on the go.

New Steam Controller?

On top of these improvements, Valve is also looking to release a new Steam Controller.

Yang told The Verge that they want to make a new one. But for now, they are mainly focusing on working on the Steam Deck. So it might take some time before we see a new controller.
