ChatGPT, a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI), has become an internet hit thanks to its impressive - and unsettling - ability to mimic human conversation in written interactions.

CNBC described this tool as a sophisticated and imaginative step beyond the chatbots of decades past in Silicon Valley, autonomously generating text in response to written requests.

San Francisco-based research firm OpenAI created the technology. OpenAI was founded by Sam Altman and funded by Microsoft, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and Khosla Ventures.

ChatGPT The Flaws

According to Business Insider India, fears that students may use ChatGPT to cheat their way to an easy A have emerged since it has been used to produce large blocks of code, television scripts, and even complete academic articles.

One Twitter user said, "We're witnessing the death of the college essay in [real-time]."

Yet, some professors do not give a hoot about this issue.

Stuart Selber, an English professor at Penn State, remarked that he is not a major admirer of the gloom and doom. He thinks something seems poised to destroy the current model of higher education every year or two, but this has not occurred as of yet.

Selber claims that he is no more anxious about ChatGPT than he is about any other technological advancement in the field of literature.

While Selber acknowledges that ChatGPT's writing is excellent in an abstract fashion, he believes that it lacks the ability to address specific or local concerns, develop an original argument, or analyze previous statements rather than just quoting them. From his perspective, these are the most critical parts of a well-written essay.

Because of this, Selber concludes that essays generated only by ChatGPT cannot possibly get high marks. In this opinion, he is not alone.

Dr. Jacqueline Antonovich, an assistant professor at Muhlenberg College, tweeted that she used ChatGPT to generate a paper on a question from her students' midterm essays. She said the result "would earn an F. Probably an F- if that's possible."

ChatGPT Potential Application

According to Selber, ChatGPT will not replace students' need for original writing but may help them improve their drafts. In fact, he believes it may provide a quick cut for some of the more laborious aspects of essay writing, such as compiling a literature review or a synopsis of the current research in a student's issue area.

University of Leeds professor Dr. Leah Henrickson speculates that, when used responsibly, AI has the potential to improve educational equity.

Dr. Henrickson believes it may help individuals express themselves in new ways. This might be helpful for ESL (English as a second language) students or others unfamiliar with academic writing.

College students utilize AI applications like Grammarly to enhance written phrases. Dr. Henrickson sees ChatGPT as the next stage for these technologies.

Dr. Henrickson says Leeds University is altering its exams in response to AI. It wants to concentrate more on critical analysis and judgment, human skills, than simple knowledge retention, which ChatGPT can imitate.
