Sony announced the sales milestone during a showcase at CES 2023 on Wednesday, Jan. 4, which equates to at least 10.7 million PlayStation 5 devices having been distributed to various stores. Generally speaking, shipment quantities are larger than actual sales.

This means that the tech giant sold over 30 million PS5 devices globally, an increase of 5 million sales since the latest sales number was released last year.

Sales Goal

Sony's current fiscal year ends on Mar. 31 of this year.

With little under three months left in the year, the firm has to find up to 7.3 million units in shipping sales to meet its annual goal of 18 million units. It is a figure it held to in its most recent sales data announced in November last year, as per a report by Video Game Chronicles.

Sony president Jim Ryan claimed that December 2022 was the PS5's best sales month to date during his keynote address at CES on Wednesday, Jan. 4. This is likely due to the PS5's expanded availability, allowing more users to acquire one.

Sony has previously said that its next fiscal year, beginning in April 2023, will see the shipment of 23 million PlayStation 5 systems, putting it ahead of the PS4 at the same point in its lifetime.

In November of the previous year, the electronics titan said it had delivered 3.3 million PS5 systems in the three months ending September. 30, 2022 (second quarter). This was the same number that it had shipped in the same period a year earlier.

During the results call, Sony said that PS5 sales were on track and that the company was confident it could still hit its 18 million unit sales goal. Based on the company's estimates, 6.5 million game consoles were produced in the second quarter alone.

Headwinds Before the Success

This is good news for Sony, even though in August, it increased the console price in several regions. According to Eurogamer, Sony has recently announced that the worldwide scarcity of game consoles has ended.

"Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward," said Ryan.

It took a lot of work for Sony to achieve this milestone.

It took a lot of work, but we finally made it! Amid the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak in April 2020, Sony released the PS5 in November of that year. There was a worldwide disruption in the supply chain, and consoles were hard to come by for the first two years of the console's existence.

In light of the current circumstances, Ryan addressed the PlayStation community and expressed gratitude to those who have waited as the firm handled enormous demand despite global problems over the previous two years.
