When you hear the word "tracking tag," the two things that first come to your mind are Apple and Samsung. The two tech giants heavily dominate this industry because of these items that can detect misplaced or missing belongings.

Apparently, Google might be entering the sector soon as the latest report says that it will release a similar device. The tracking tag is reportedly going under the "grogu" moniker.

Google hints to enter the tracking tag market because of the rumored device similar to AirTag, according to a reputable leaker.

Based on a report by XDA Developers on Tuesday, Jan. 17, popular leaker Kuba Wojciechowski reveals that the company is now working on a smart tracker with the codename "grogu."

Google's Nest team is the assigned group to overtake the task of developing this tracking device. Kuba adds that the product is expected to launch with a built-in speaker.

Just like a typical Apple AirTag, it will also come in different color variations. Aside from that, the search engine firm will include Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) and ultra-wide (UWB) support for more accurate tracking of lost objects.

This is not the first time that Google mentioned these features. In 2022, the company said that UWB stacks and Bluetooth will be packed inside the Android 13 OS.

It could mean that Google wants to be more competitive against more known brands with their cheap but capable tracking devices. These features provide low energy consumption while maintaining high-quality tracking.

It should be noted that the upcoming tracking device will be shipped with Fast Pair support. This means that the device will get a "Locator tag" that users can use to easily pair their devices without the need of going deeper into the settings.

At the time, Wojciechowski said that Google has not yet disclosed the official release date of the "grogu" tracking tag. However, he assumes that it will be available later this year.

Obi's Google-Made Tracker Has an Awkward Name

In another story by Yanko Design, Google has hinted at creating an AirTag-inspired tracker that has a very awkward name.

With the help of Obi Fidler, the company has presented "G-Spot," an early concept for its GPS smart tracker that could go at par with Apple's tracking tool.

The two devices are almost the same in features starting from their portability to their design.

Google claims that G Spot can last for over a year given its CR20232 battery. It's easy to take in and out when you want to use it again.

Of course, it comes with a case that's inspired by the Google Maps pin icon. To make sure you won't lose it, there's a keyring attached to the casing.
