Clean Energy Charging has quietly rolled out in iOS 16.1. This feature is activated by default.

Apple is known to be pushing its green movement for the next decade to reduce its carbon footprint on the planet. This might be one of the company's ways to address the environmental issues happening on earth.

The Cupertino tech firm first announced this update in September 2022. At that time, the critics still had no clue about its performance ahead of its launch.

However, some people on social media are recently complaining about the slower charging time on iPhones with iOS 16.1.

Clean Energy Charging has arrived on iOS 16.1 yet some people have still no idea how to set it up. Read more to know more about this feature.

According to Apple Insider, this iPhone feature is focused on reducing carbon emissions by trimming down unhealthy charging habits on a smart device.

The iPhone maker clarifies that this feature can only be activated during extended charging sessions that usually happen in school and work.

Once an iOS device is connected to a charger, the user will be informed regarding its carbon emissions via an iPhone report. The data gathered will tell the user about the charging time of the device.

Why are people angry over clean energy charging?

Since Sunday, Feb. 26, social media platforms are pooling with criticisms about the controversial Clean Energy Charging.

Some people think that Apple is wrong in dictating them when to charge their devices using the feature.

According to a report by Fox Business, some users see Clean Energy Charging to be selective in recharging the iPhone's battery when it's switched on. This is because it only allows the electrical grids which provide solar energy, wind energy, and other forms of cleaner energy sources.

Somehow, it sounds unfair for those people who are residing in a place where heavy carbon emission is present such as nearby a power plant, factory, and more.

To make things clear, the carbon emission forecast is not all about searching for hot spots of clean energy. It's focused on looking for the electrical grid with the least carbon emissions based on the average carbon emissions over time in a particular location.

When does clean energy charging activate?

There are four important points that every iPhone user should take note of when it comes to Clean Energy Charging activation.

  1. First, it activates when the user is currently in a Significant Location (for example: work, school, or home).
  2. Secondly, when there are expected heavy emissions while your iPhone is charging.
  3. Thirdly, when the iPhone detects that it will be plugged in for several hours. It best applies when a user charges the phone overnight.
  4. Lastly, if there's a waiting time for the device to welcome the cleaner energy while it's charging.
