Recently, Garmin has launched two new GPS-enabled smartwatches: the Forerunner 265 and Forerunner 965. Both feature new AMOLED screens, replacing the prior Memory-in-Pixel design of the earlier Forerunners.

AMOLED Screens and Its Advantages and Disadvantages

According to the story by Giz China, this is the first time Garmin has used an AMOLED screen, and it has advantages and disadvantages. Although these displays allow for a much brighter tone, they demand more battery power and may lack readability in direct sunlight.

Garmin's most recent offering is the Garmin Forerunner 265 and 965, as also noted in an article by Android Police, which features new AMOLED screens. AMOLED stands for "active-matrix organic light-emitting diode," a newer technology than the traditional LCD screens often used in Garmin products.

Garmin Explains Advantages of AMOLED Screens in the Forerunner 965 Series Smartwatch

As explained further by Garmin, AMOLED screens are becoming the standard in smartwatches, and the Forerunner series is Garmin's attempt to keep up with the competition. AMOLED technology provides a brighter runtime, more contrast, and higher response time than that of traditional LCD screens.

This makes them more suitable for outdoor activities, as the display will remain visible under direct sunlight. In addition, because these screens use less power than LCD screens, the battery life is extended - the Forerunner 965 can last up to 31 hours in GPS mode.

High Cost of Garmin Forerunner 265 and 965 May Deter Buyers

The Garmin Forerunner 265 and 965 come with numerous features. Both models have SpO2 monitors, activity and sleep tracking, performance metrics, and wireless payment technology. The 965 adds unique trackers such as Garmin Golf support, real-time endurance, and heat acclimation.

However, despite these advantages, the cost of these new models may deter some. The Forerunner 265 is currently available for $450, and according to Garmin's website, the 965 is priced at $599. These prices may be higher than those of other running watches on the market.

AMOLED Displays vs. LCD: Is the Risk Worth the Reward for Garmin's Forerunner Range?

It is yet to be seen if Garmin's latest Forerunner range justifies the increased price or if the new AMOLED screens are truly an improvement over the traditional LCD models. The growing number of people using outdoor activities may be the biggest deciding factor for the success of the Forerunner series.

If the technology is found to be reliable, the Forerunner series could be a great entrant into the world of outdoor sports and wearable tech. It is a big step for Garmin to switch from the typical LCD to an AMOLED display, and the outcome of this decision remains to be seen.

Garmin's Commitment to Technological Innovation and Staying Ahead of its Competitors

These new models offer similar technology and function but with upgraded readability. The AMOLED could also make some features more accessible and other more complex features, such as the golf support, easier to read.

Whatever the outcome, it is clear that Garmin's evolution into the sports and health market signifies the company's dedication to technological innovation and staying ahead of its competitors.
