In recent news, Fitbit has announced some changes that are making longtime users question the future of the fitness tracker brand. Except from the 27th of March in 2023, it appears that the company's services designed for community engagement, such as the much-loved Challenges and Open Groups, will no longer be available.

A Devastating Blow: The Removal of Fitbit Challenges and Open Groups 

As a long-time fitness tracker user, it was devasting to hear that Fitbit removed two of its most valuable features: Challenges and open groups. As part of its mission to provide motivation and encouragement to its users, Fitbit set up Challenges, which let you join up with 2-10 friends or family to compete and compare your progress on a daily, weekly, or weekend basis.

According to the story by XDA-Developers, the recent move by Fitbit to eliminate two of its most popular and cherished features, Challenges and open groups, has left users feeling frustrated and uncertain about the brand's future. 

Challenges were one of Fitbit's major benefits, allowing wearers to compete with friends and family, reach personal bests, and participate in immersive Adventures. Open groups provided an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals worldwide who shared similar passions, such as healthy eating and weight loss. 

The Impact of Losing Community-Driven Benefits on Fitbit's Market Share 

The decision to tear down these features was reportedly made to "enhance the Fitbit app" with Google-developed technology and improve customer experience. However, it also takes away one of the major benefits of Fitbit over competitors like Apple, and Samsung Galaxy watches. 

Motivating and encouraging users to pursue healthy lifestyles is what set Fitbit apart, and without these features, it's unclear how the company will distinguish itself from other brands. 

Fitbit has been leading the race since 2014, as seen on Statista, accounting for nearly half the worldwide market share of all the fitness trackers and smartwatches available. This is largely due to the community-driven benefits that were offered, such as challenges and open groups. 

The Big Gamble: Fitbit's Decision to Remove Popular Features 

Now, without these popular features, many people are left to wonder if Fitbit can remain the market leader, knowing that Apple has its own challenges and users don't necessarily need to own a Fitbit to use Fitbit-branded features. 

Ultimately, the company's decision to remove challenges and open groups feels like a big gamble. These features provided the exact motivation and encouragement that people sought when searching for a fitness tracker or smartwatch.

The Challenges Fitbit Faces to Remain Competitive and Maintain User Loyalty 

Despite the upsetting changes, it remains to be seen if the company can still differentiate itself and stay ahead of the competition. Over 31 million people were using Fitbit at least once a week.

Unfortunately, this decision means Fitbit will lose the trust and loyalty of long-term users like myself, who saw the platform as investing in a strong community to build their fitness goals and form lasting relationships. It's no wonder that many of us question what's in store for Fitbit in the future.
