According to the story by Interesting Engineering, GM and Samsung SDI are working together to construct a new manufacturing facility with an estimated yearly capacity of up to 50GWh, enough for 500,000 electric vehicles. This factory would require a significant investment from the companies, likely billions of dollars, to cover costs.

Samsung SDI has already indicated its intention to increase investment in battery cathode supply to meet the demand of its agreement with GM, allocating $32.8 billion over the next decade.

Investing in Growth: Samsung SDI's Potential Expansion in Europe

The businesses still have to consider the prospects of the various cell and module types required to fit the Ultium EV platform, which GM CEO Mary Barra indicated as highly adaptable. So far, the platform has mainly relied on pouch batteries from LG Energy Solution. However, Samsung SDI's cylindrical cells could allow for even more flexibility.

The manufacturer has also talked with BMW and Volvo, two of Europe's leading automakers. Samsung SDI has indicated its interest in setting up a new factory near its existing one in Goed, Hungary, again likely requiring significant funding for construction.

Samsung SDI and GM's Joint Investment Could Represent a Real Breakthrough in Battery Adaptability

The battery market is an increasingly competitive space. With Samsung SDI becoming more active worldwide, fans may see the greater choice for EV makers looking to secure battery supply.

Couple that with GM's Ultium platform, and it could represent a real breakthrough in battery adaptability for the EV sector. The joint investment would result in a whopping $3.8 billion, according to Electrive.
