With its star-studded cast, sprawling neon-soaked landscape, and a mix of classic cyberpunk and sci-fi elements, CD Projekt Red's "Cyberpunk 2077" brought a lot of excitement when it launched in 2020.

Phantom Liberty: Hope for a Turnaround for CD Projekt Red's Critically Panned Game

But, while the game has seen its fair share of success over the past year, it has been beset by technical problems and several DRM issues that have caused the game to be almost universally panned by critics and fans alike.

According to the story by Game Rant, with the upcoming release of "Cyberpunk 2077's" first-ever story-based expansion, Phantom Liberty, fans of CD Projekt Red's futuristic RPG shooter were certainly getting their hopes up.

CD Projekt Red Confirms Phantom Liberty Trailers Will Not Feature in 'Cyberpunk 2077'

Hopes of seeing a link between Phantom Liberty and last year's successful Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime had even arisen after a rumor suggested a potential major appearance from the anime's lead, Falco.

However, despite the promise of such a wonderful tie-in between Edgerunners and "Cyberpunk 2077," CD Projekt Red has since announced that the content shown in yesterday's leaked Phantom Liberty trailer will not feature in the game, per Radek Grabowski on Twitter.

No Cross-Over with Edgerunners Series Confirmed by CD Projekt Red

Though CD Projekt Red's confirmation is a blow to those looking to see this connection explored, it is not unexpected. Previous updates to "Cyberpunk 2077" have featured subtle references to the Edgerunners series and its many characters, with CD Projekt Red even going as far as to add a special cameo from the show in a February 2021 update patch for the game.

However, despite this connection, viewers will unfortunately not get to explore the space above Night City or witness an appearance from the show's lovable rogue, Falco. However, many fans won't be too disappointed with this announcement, as the game's lengthy list of planned content is surely more than enough to keep avid game players busy for days on end.

Idris Elba and All-Star Cast to Take the Lead in Phantom Liberty

The upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion is set to take place in Pacifica's Dogtown area, with the DLC's plot focusing on V's meeting with the mysterious FIA agent Solomon Reed. Movie star Idris Elba is set to take the role of agent Reed, offering fans the chance to dive back into the dangers of Night City with an all-star cast acting in the expansion.

CD Projekt Red is yet to announce exactly when Phantom Liberty will be released, though it is expected to launch sometime in 2023 on current-gen consoles. Until then, CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk RPG fans will have to make do with the many updates and patches released to accompany and improve the base game over the past year.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is also a great option for those looking for more content in the universe between now and then, offering a unique glimpse into the world and lore of CD Projekt Red's latest game.
