GitHub, a famous platform known for internet hosting has started its first layoff this month. The Microsoft-owned firm reportedly axed some of its workforce in India, particularly the entire engineering team.

The move came following the worsening market conditions all over the world.

GitHub is the latest company to layoff roughly 10% of its workforce this month.

With the weakening economic state globally, it's understandable why many companies decide to reduce a portion of their workforce to mitigate further losses.

As such, the latest firm to "virtually" layoff some of its staff is GitHub, a developer-centered platform. According to a report by TechCrunch on Tuesday, March 28, the company has informed the affected workers on the same day.

A knowledgeable person who is familiar with the said issue says that GitHub has already diminished over 100 jobs in South Asia as part of its streamlining process.

Back in February, the scenario was already established according to a GitHub spokesperson. In an interview with the tech news site, the company's representative said that about 10% of the existing employees will be axed from the firm in March.

"As part of the reorganization plan shared in February, workforce reductions were made today as part of difficult but necessary decisions and realignments to both protect the health of our business in the short term and grant us the capacity to invest in our long-term strategy moving forward," the spokesperson said.

Is it Performance-Related Outside Streamlining?

According to Business Today, the exact number of laid off employees is 142. GitHub gave them two-month pay as "severance." However, it's hard to say if the decision is somewhat based on the worker's performance.

As another source says, the latest GitHub layoff wasn't based on the performance evaluation of the employees. The company only asked the engineering team to leave their current posts.

As per Thomas Dohmke, GitHub CEO, it's a hard decision that the company made since they will now say goodbye to "Hubbers" who have been part of the organization for some time.

He adds that the layoff is designed to "protect the short-term health" of the business while also allowing them to thrive in the industry through their "long-term strategy."

Aside from that, Dohmke mentioned that GitHub will focus on integrating artificial intelligence with "urgency." This might mean that the company will launch more opportunities and programs related to AI on the platform.
