Breaking Box Office Records

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" continues to be a hit at the box office. According to Variety's report, the video game adaptation already achieved the $500-million mark for global sales with only a $100-million production budget.

The movie earned $260.3 million in North America and $248.4 million globally, lifting its worldwide haul to $508.7 million. It becomes the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far, surpassing the $212.8 million of "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania". Mario will have to fend off surefire hits like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1. to keep up with this record.

Additionally, Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the biggest video game adaptation in the United States and Canada, surpassing several adaptions like Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog. Warcraft was the previous record holder of the biggest video game adaptation, with its global haul of $439 million.

This movie was produced by Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo, and directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. It features a voice cast of Hollywood stars, including Chriss Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black.

Aside from being the biggest movie adaptation and 2023's highest-grossing film, The Super Mario Bros Movie also becomes the second biggest film since 2019 in worldwide box office terms as it surpassed the "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train" and behind "Minions The Rise of Gru".

Potential Sequel or Spinoff?

As per IGN's report, the Mario movie's success both domestically and internationally could lead to potential sequels and spinoffs in the future, given that (Spoiler Alert!) the post-credit scene hinted at a setup for a potential continuation of the story.

Box Office Expert Shawn Robbins shared his thoughts on the Super Mario Bros Movie and called it, "the first tried and true big animated blockbuster that has incredible appeal to people of all ages and all backgrounds."

Super Mario already released a 1993 live-action movie and since then, Nintendo has not released any movie adaptations of its properties for decades.

Engadget reported that the gaming company struck gold by coming back to Hollywood with this movie adaption through the help of Illumination, the same studio for Despicable Me, to focus on replicating the widely organized art style of Mario games in animation.

By looking at these numbers that were only earned for a week in theaters, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has the potential to become one of the biggest animated films of all time. However, there is a long way to go as they still have not reached the 1-billion mark yet.
