In the past few years, Google, Apple, and Microsoft have shown their intent to replace traditional passwords on their products.

They wanted to create new sign-in systems that are safer and more reliable.

"For some time, we and others in the industry have been working on a simpler and safer alternative to passwords," said Google in its latest blog post

Now, the search engine giant finally rolled out its own passwordless effort called Passkey logins.

The search engine giant explained that Passkeys are cryptographic keys linked with devices to confirm users' identities.

These password replacements consist of a public and private pair; the public Passkey is registered with an app or website, while the private one is stored on users' devices.

Google added that Passkeys allow consumers to sign in via a face scan, fingerprint, or screen lock PIN. The tech firm further stated that its new Passkeys are more resistant to online attacks, such as phishing campaigns.

Passkeys are Now on Google Accounts

Google proudly announced that its Passkey logins are now available for Google accounts. The search engine giant added that the new Passkeys would soon be rolled out to Google Workplace accounts and administrators.

Google said that they will soon have the option to enable passkeys for their end-users during sign-ins.

Although the new Passkeys are quite promising, Google said that it would still take time before passwords are completely removed.

This is why the company still offers traditional passwords to Google Accounts.
