IBM has recently launched Watsonx, a new artificial intelligence and data platform that assists businesses in integrating AI into their operations.

The platform will be available in July, allowing businesses to train and deploy AI models, produce code using natural language, and employ huge language models developed for various purposes, such as chemical production and climate change modeling, Reuters reports.

Using more accurate, carefully selected datasets and a "toolkit for governance" should yield more accurate answers and a more responsible approach than competitors.

IBM Leverages Lower Cost of Adopting AI

Arvind Krishna, IBM's CEO, stated that the platform's introduction comes a decade after IBM's Watson won the game show Jeopardy. Check out how the bot won the gameshow in this New York Times piece.

Krishna also notes in an interview with Reuters that the cost of Watson made it tough for businesses to use at the time, but the decreased cost of adopting AI models today means the possibilities of success are great.

Asked how the tech will affect human jobs at the firm, Krishna stated that while AI may eliminate some back-office roles at IBM in the next years, the company is adding more people in areas where there is a higher demand from clients.

More Responsible Approach to AI

Krishna also revealed that IBM was embracing a more open ecosystem and partnering with open-source AI software development hub Hugging Face and others.

An Axios report tells us that IBM is helping clients implement AI via a "data model factory," offering IBM clients products tuned for their specialties in domains like language, code, chemistry, and geospatial data.

The platform is designed to provide a responsible approach to AI, with a focus on regulating high-risk uses of AI.

Watsonx still has a lot to show, but IBM is confident in its ability to create a responsible and productive AI platform that can assist businesses in integrating AI into their operations.

Rob Thomas, IBM's chief commercial officer, argues that while AI will not replace managers, managers who use AI will replace managers who do not.

A Closer Look at the Budding AI Tool

According to the company's website, the platform consists of three major components that form a robust system. The first is the watsonx.ai studio. Here, new foundational models are created utilizing generative AI and machine learning.

The next component is the watsonx.data store. This feature combines a data lake's flexibility with a data warehouse's efficiency. In other words, it is a location where all the data required to power AI models can be stored and rapidly accessed. This enables the platform to learn and evolve as additional data is submitted.

Finally, the watsonx.governance toolkit is offered. This component focuses on developing accountable, transparent, and explicable AI workflows. It ensures that the platform operates ethically and legally and that its decision-making processes are transparent and answerable.
