Apple is Reportedly Developing microLED for Future iPhones

A recent leak suggests that Apple is planning to incorporate microLED technology in its upcoming iPhone displays, departing from the current OLED screens. According to a roadmap revealed in DigiTimes' latest report, Apple's transition to microLED will begin with the release of the Apple Watch Ultra in late 2024 through 2025, followed by iPhones adopting the technology at a later stage.

MicroLED is a display technology known for its superior performance and visual quality.

Compared to OLED, microLED offers better color reproduction, higher contrast ratios, and improved overall display quality. Additionally, it consumes less power, resulting in potential battery life enhancements for Apple devices.

While microLED promises significant advancements over OLED, the transition to this technology is still a few years away.

Apple's OLED for Current and Upcoming Releases

According to MacRumors, Apple is yet to transition fully from its old display technology to OLED.

Apple's venture into OLED technology began with the introduction of the first Apple Watch and the iPhone X. Since then, OLED displays have become a staple feature across the iPhone lineup. The leaked roadmap suggests that Apple is already looking into new displays in the form of microLED.

Still, leaks claim that Cupertino intends to complete its transition to OLED technology with future iPad and Mac models coming next year.

Apple's Display Technology

Since the iPhone X's release, Apple sourced its OLED from its rival company, Samsung, to bring the display for the next generation of iPhones to follow.

For the longest time, Apple's iPhones feature Samsung's technology, and this is not yet likely to change in the future. Rumors behind the iPhone 15 claim that a next-gen Samsung-made OLED will give the device its screen, still relying on the company for it.

The latest report is a massive jump from OLED to microLED, and Apple's innovation and providing the latest technology to its releases may give more legitimacy to this leaked roadmap that centers on new developments for its displays.

While the transition to microLED displays may be years down the line, Apple will continuously give updates to its product releases in the coming months that will bring more information to its display development. As the leaks continue to generate speculation, there is a chance that Apple would bring better displays for its devices, centering on the microLED for the Apple Watch and the iPhones soon.
