With Artifact's AI, users can now flag clickbait articles as misleading and rewrite them with a proper headline.

Starting Friday, June 1, the Artifact news app will help you restructure the headlines of the articles you think are just click-baiting the readers.

According to TechCrunch, the app which Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom founded can summon the GPT-4 model to do the whole rewriting process from scratch.

Artifact is quite new on the internet since it was only introduced to the public back in February 2023. The AI-powered app, according to some users, is quite similar to TikTok but in a text style.

Systrom noticed a surge in the number of app users for the past weeks. As per Systrom, many people are enjoying their freedom in using the clickbait market of Artifact.

It's clear that people are passionate about ridding the world of clickbait," he says. "It touches a nerve. What if we actually just build a product that lets you take action based on the problem that you're seeing?" Systrom told The Verge.

Why are clickbait articles bad?

As we know, clicking a clickbait article does not only waste our time visiting a page or a website. Engaging in such misleading articles can also deceive other people who are unaware of the facts of the news.

Spotting a clickbait headline is very easy. Writers who actually want to gain attention from the crowd usually spice things up by writing flowery words that can hook you up in an instant. As a matter of fact, the headline can be tricky, but you will notice as you read that it's just for bluff.

Artifact users could not find peace in seeing clickbait headlines everywhere. Not only is it too annoying to read, but it also scrambles the recommendation systems on the news app.

For instance, Artifact might recommend you to read celebrity news for today where in fact, you don't have a single interest in the entertainment page. It messes up the whole algorithm and forces you to read the news you shouldn't read.

Systrom explains that the AI will start rewriting the headline the moment you long-press the article in your feed. When you see an animation that's loading, that's the time you will notice the birth of a new headline. Besides the title, you will see an icon of a small star which suggests that it's not the original headline.

It should be noted that the Artifact news app is limited to rewriting headlines if they only come from the feed.

To produce more accurate headlines, the humans intervene with the AI model for a more thorough review. As of the moment, Systrom says that the whole process is still manual, but in the near future, it will be automatic.
