OpenAI head Sam Altman says that we won't see GPT-5 anytime soon since its training has not yet started. It might take some months before we see GPT-4's successor coming to the public.

Sam Altman says that training GPT-5 will require more work to do before being released.

When GPT-4 arrived, some people thought that GPT-5 would be released shortly. However, as Altman confirmed this week, it took them at least 6 months before they launched it.

According to TechCrunch, the OpenAI boss said that we won't see GPT-5 for some time since it will take them a long time to train the AI model.

"We have a lot of work to do before we start that model. We're working on the new ideas that we think we need for it, but we are certainly not close to it to start," Altman said in a conference hosted by Economic Times, an India-based publication.

Why GPT-5 Will Be Left in the Dark For Quite a Time

As much as we want almost all things to be incorporated by AI, this machine-learning system is not always a go-to solution for convenience. Industry experts think that it has limitations and is doomed to fail humans.

Back in March, we could remember that the biggest names in the tech industry, including Steve Wozniak and Elon Musk, opposed AI development via a signed letter. Furthermore, the two said that the AI labs need to temporarily stop operations for at least six months.

Altman claimed that the letter lacked the "most technical nuance about where we need the pause." He added that OpenAI was not yet training the upcoming chatbot, stating that it wouldn't happen for "some time."

The OpenAI boss acknowledged the concerns of some organizations regarding the dangers of using AI. He even said that the company was also addressing the issue so it could arrive at solutions soon.

Despite the calls to shut down big AI laboratories, Altman thought that closing smaller AI startups was a bad idea.

Up to this day, Sam is encouraging lawmakers to partake in a huge discussion about AI. He says that OpenAI is always willing to work with the regulators when it comes to implementations.

Early Rumors About GPT-5

According to Beebom, the previous rumors suggested that GPT-5 was arriving in late 2023. However, since Altman already announced that we wouldn't see it coming for some time, it's safe to say that it might debut by 2024.

Some of the expected features for GPT-5 include reduced hallucination, bigger computing power, multimodal functionality, and long-term memory. If this is true, we might witness some specs we did not see from GPT-4.
