Emphasizing the need for safe and secure development and utilization of AI, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the summit on Wednesday during his visit to Washington, where he met with US President Joe Biden, AFP reported.
Upcoming AI Summit
Sunak acknowledged the immense potential of AI to transform various aspects of people's lives positively. However, he also stressed the importance of ensuring responsible and secure practices in its development and usage.
The upcoming summit, scheduled for the autumn, will bring together like-minded countries to create a regulatory response based on the discussions and actions taken during the G7 meetings held in Japan last month.
Although some speculate that the summit could serve as a counter-measure to potential authoritarian exploitation of AI by nations like China and Russia, Sunak's spokesperson denied these claims. Instead, the focus remains on establishing a collaborative approach to AI governance that safeguards against risks while promoting innovation and progress.
While the UK seeks to position itself as a global leader in AI regulation following Brexit, the United States, and the European Union have already initiated their own direct dialogues on AI. That raises questions about the UK's role in shaping international AI governance.
However, Sunak expressed confidence in the UK's capabilities, citing the country's flourishing AI industry, substantial investments, and world-class research. He believes that, after the US, no other democratic nation possesses such strength in AI.
Despite the significant age difference between Sunak and Biden, the UK Prime Minister dismissed suggestions that Biden was out of touch with AI.
Sunak highlighted that discussions on artificial intelligence took place during their meeting at the G7 summit in Japan, indicating that Biden is aware of both the challenges and opportunities posed by this technology. He also emphasized the need for collaboration among nations to address future threats and protect their countries.
