A recent survey conducted by Workday, a system software company, reveals that a significant majority of business leaders are under pressure to increase the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in their organizations. 

The survey, which involved 1,000 executives from across the globe, sheds light on the importance of human oversight in decision-making processes involving AI and machine learning.

Challenges Faced by Decision-makers

The report highlights the challenges faced by decision-makers in fully implementing AI and ML technologies. 

It identifies three key obstacles that hinder organizations from maximizing the potential of AI: the need for a solid foundation of high-quality data, the establishment of clear use cases and a strategic approach, and bridging the skills gap within the workforce.

Despite these challenges, there is a sense of optimism among the respondents. Four out of five executives agree that AI and machine learning (ML)  are necessary to maintain competitiveness in the business landscape. 

Furthermore, two-thirds of them state that these technologies have already improved productivity and operational efficiency in their organizations.

The survey findings also indicate that many organizations have started incorporating AI and ML into their operations, albeit with limitations.

Feeling the Pressure

Decision-makers are feeling the pressure, often from higher levels of management, to push the boundaries of AI and ML applications. It is evident that organizations have intentions to increase investment in AI and ML in the coming years, recognizing the potential benefits they offer.

Those organizations that have successfully deployed AI and ML are already reaping tangible returns on investment across various use cases. However, concerns persist regarding data quality and privacy, with limited solutions currently available to address these issues. 

Additionally, ensuring that personnel possesses the necessary AI-related skills is a prominent concern for many teams.

The survey also explores the future impact of AI and ML on the workforce. While 45% of decision-makers believe that these technologies will augment workloads and create new career paths for employees, 43% express concerns about job displacement and potential unemployment. 

A smaller percentage, 12%, holds a more pessimistic view, suggesting that AI and ML may completely replace humans and have a negative impact on workers.

Addressing the responsible implementation of AI is another crucial aspect highlighted in the survey. A staggering 93% of decision-makers believe it is important for humans to assist AI or ML when making significant decisions, emphasizing the need for human oversight. 

However, only 29% express confidence in the current ethical application of AI and ML in businesses, while 52% believe the ethical application will be achieved within the next five years. Potential bias is identified as one of the top risks for organizations when implementing AI and ML.

Overall, the survey findings emphasize the growing importance of AI and ML in the business world. Decision-makers are grappling with challenges, yet they recognize the necessity of these technologies for competitiveness.
