New rumors are circulating about the development of future Nintendo movies with Illumination, hinting that these next films would be animated features of two famous characters in different franchises. One would be from the Mario franchise, centering on Luigi, and the other will focus on The Legend of Zelda's film adaptation.

It is not yet known how these movies will be made as these are still rumors, but it opens up the possibility of a Nintendo Cinematic Universe (NCU) in the future.

Nintendo Rumored to be Working on a Luigi, Zelda Movie with Illumination

Zippo revealed in a new blog post that Nintendo and Illumination are rumored to be working on more video game adaptations for future animated theatrical releases that will succeed the highly successful "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."

There are four projects in the works by Nintendo and Illumination, one centering on The Super Mario Bros. Movie's sequel and a rumored Donkey Kong project.

However, Zippo made mention of two new titles for future animated projects, including a standalone Luigi movie and an adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.

It is still unknown when these animated features will arrive, especially since there is still a strike from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA regarding Hollywood's labor practices.

A Standalone Movie for Luigi and The Legend of Zelda?

According to ComicBook Gaming, the most likely adaptation for Luigi's character is tied to his standalone game series, "Luigi's Mansion," known for its light horror-adventure experience.

On the other hand, The Legend of Zelda's animated film adaptation would be a culmination of different games instead of focusing on one specific title. Moreover, it was said that the main character, Link, would speak in the film as opposed to his character in the game.

'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' and Nintendo's Fame

Nintendo and Illumination's 2022 release of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is regarded as the biggest video game adaptation in the world, and it broke box office records

While this movie was meant for the younger audience, it appealed significantly to all types of audiences, with Mario being a staple name throughout time.

Apart from its theatrical release, Nintendo will also release the Mario movie to streaming services, such as Netflix, coming later this year. The film has already arrived at NBC's Peacock platform and will run exclusively for four months before heading to Netflix.

The movie is expected to arrive on Netflix by October, giving fans and children a chance to watch or rewatch the Mario movie again. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" was one of the most significant releases from Nintendo and Illumination, marking a milestone for video game adaptations, still retaining its animated features.

Luigi could be one of the main characters in future movies of Nintendo, alongside Zelda, to head to theatrical screens if rumors should be true.
