Google is reportedly gearing up to take foldable technology beyond smartphones and into tablets. According to insider reports from the upstream supply chain, the tech giant is seriously considering the development of a foldable tablet.

This news comes shortly after Google's debut in the foldable phone arena with the Pixel Fold earlier this year. If all goes as planned, the foldable tablet could potentially be unveiled at Google I/O in 2024.

Google Foldable Tablet?

The information about Google's foldable tablet aspirations comes from the reputable source, Digitimes, which has a track record of reliable insider leaks.

While the specific details about the device remain shrouded in mystery, the potential for a foldable tablet signifies a significant leap forward for portable devices.

However, Google is not the only tech behemoth rumored to be exploring this exciting technology. Another industry giant, Apple, is also said to be dipping its toes into the foldable tablet waters.

The same Digitimes report hints at Apple's interest in a foldable iPad, building on its long-standing efforts to develop foldable smartphones. Analysts have previously speculated that Apple's foldable iPad could hit the market as early as 2024.

The potential of a foldable iPad from Apple could be a game-changer in the tablet market.

MacRumors tells us that by incorporating a hinge mechanism, the device would fold and unfold like a book, revealing a larger display compared to standard iPad models.

According to previous reports, this rumored foldable iPad might boast an all-new design and feature a lightweight and durable carbon fiber kickstand, further enhancing its appeal to users.

One burning question is where a foldable iPad would stand in Apple's product lineup. As the 12.9-inch iPad Pro already commands a starting price of $1,099, it is conceivable that the foldable iPad would position itself as a premium offering.

As with any rumor in the tech world, there is always a degree of uncertainty. MacRumors notes that Ming-Chi Kuo, a prominent Apple analyst, previously predicted a 2024 launch for the foldable iPad, but other industry insiders like Mark Gurman have yet to corroborate this timeline.

Apple's plans may well remain in the research and development stage for now, as the company carefully assesses the market demand and technological readiness for such an innovative product.

More 'Foldable' Players

Android Authority notes that if Google and Apple proceed with their foldable tablet endeavors, they will not be the first brands to venture into this territory.

ASUS and Lenovo have already staked their claim in the market by offering laptops with foldable displays. These devices can operate as traditional laptops when partially folded, and when fully unfurled, they serve as standalone monitors, showcasing the versatility of the foldable form factor.
