Sony Group Corp has recently achieved a remarkable feat, selling 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide. This milestone was announced by Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan in a blog post.

"It took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand," said Jim Ryan in a blog post. But the perseverance paid off, and now, the PS5 is soaring high, competing fiercely with its predecessor, the PS4, and setting new records in the gaming industry.

The PS5 launch was accompanied by an unparalleled catalog of games, setting the stage for an immersive gaming experience like never before.

Record-Breaking Sales

Statista tells us that The PS2 had long been the best-selling video game console of all time, but the PS5 has been steadily closing the gap.

As of May 2023, the PS2 had sold over 158 million units worldwide, but the PS5's impressive sales performance has put it on track to potentially surpass this record.

Reuters reports that Sony initially set a target to sell 25 million PS5 units this year, aiming to set a new record for PlayStation devices. However, with 40 million units already sold, it seems likely that they will shatter their own expectations.

The Console Games Market

The success of the PS5 is reflective of the overall growth in the console games market.

According to the "Console Games Global Market Report 2023," the market is expected to grow from $73.01 billion in 2022 to $80.47 billion in 2023, marking a 10.2% compound annual growth rate.

Looking ahead, the market is projected to reach $113.17 billion in 2027, with a CAGR of 8.9%.

In other news, the first free PlayStation Plus title for next month has been revealed. The new game is part of PlayStation Plus' Essential tier, and subscribers may get it for free.
