A new feature is now under test on Meta, which would label AI-generated posts on Instagram as a way for its audience and users to identify posts created with AI tools.

That is Meta's answer to the growing AI-generated content flooding its platforms, particularly on Instagram, with the labels being vital to helping human-made ones identifiable over computer-generated media.

No gatekeeping of AI-made posts would take place in Meta, and this is the same case with other Big Tech like Google, which centers on allowing it but will see labels.

Meta Adds 'Generated by AI' Labels on Instagram as Part of its Test

Alessandro Paluzzi, best known for being a leaker on Meta's latest app and data miner features, shared this newest feature that Meta is testing for Instagram.

This labeling feature will help users determine if a post was made by artificial intelligence generators, which is apparent nowadays.

Paluzzi's tweet also shows if a media post was generated by Meta AI, one of the company's key developments, centering on its efforts for its AI projects.

Meta assured users that all AI-generated content posted on Instagram would be appropriately labeled, focusing on easier identification from human-made ones compared to computer or AI-made.

No AI-Generated Content Gatekeeping, Only Labeling

According to Engadget, this will help users discern more of what they see online, especially as there is a trove of AI-generated content appearing online now, not only on social media but also on the internet.

It follows the efforts of Google and other big tech companies to bring labels on AI-generated content on their platforms. With this label, it is ensured that user posts will not be gatekept to only human-made ones but will not necessarily be confusing for those that consume the media.

AI-Generated Content on the Internet

The rise of AI technology was massive during the start of 2023, and its significant developments have pushed its popularity through the roofs.

Apart from regulations, government officials want them to be labeled appropriately to avoid getting lost in the mix alongside human-made ones, with US Senator Michael Bennet initially calling upon tech companies, including Google, regarding this matter.

It is important to note that labeling is not new for social media and the internet, especially as the likes of TikTokTwitter, and Meta all have community guidelines to follow and moderators to control content.

For social media, some of its labels include fake news, COVID-19 misinformation, and disturbing and harmful content, among many others.

Although the call for labeling will add a notion to posts, it also comes as a forewarning about the type of online content, especially if it was made by AI and may lead people to believe one thing over another.

Meta's latest change is its testing of the AI labeling feature on Instagram, a social media that remains a massive source of entertainment, news, lifestyle, and social connections.
