Apple has previously launched its famous Cinematic Mode with the iPhone 13 series, which offered a portrait video but with the ability for the device to automatically switch its focus on different subjects. Finally, Android is getting the same feature with Vivo's addition of 4K portrait video mode.

Vivo Introduces Addition of 4K Portrait Mode Powered by Its V3 Imaging Chip for Automatic Focusing

According to Android Authority, Android phones have long had portrait mode, but they still lacked access to the smart focusing functionality. It means users had to tap on the subjects instead when taking videos.

The outlet shared Vivo's announcement of introducing a 4K portrait mode powered by the new V3 imaging chip, resulting in having the same automatic focusing that Apple Cinematic Mode has.

It was reported that the company confirmed that it could finally be able to offer an automatic subject focus in the form of detection and switching, which works just like it would with Apple. 

Vivo Announcement Includes the Option to Edit Videos Within the Smartphone, Including Swapping Backgrounds

On the company's official Weibo post regarding the feature, it was noted that users will be able to change the focus area after they finish shooting a specific clip.

Android Authority reported that they had previously seen the ability to edit the area that's in focus after in portrait mode photos. However, this feature would be the first for Android when it comes to smartphone videos.

The company also highlighted how additional camera-related features would be announced, including the generative portrait mode, which would allow users to swap the portrait mode background.

Clarification Still Needed as to How the Background Swapping Works

An example the company gave showed their ability to change the seasons in the photo from summer to winter. Users would also get the option of changing the season to spring or autumn. It was also clarified that there wasn't a definite explanation as to whether the whole background will be replaced. 

It was unclear if the entire background could be swapped out if Vivo's tech will make edits to the actual background. It is also unclear if there could be different available options.

Vivo Feature Could Also be Using AR Tech but Clarification is Still Needed

The brand could use "generative" technology, which suggests that users would be able to swap the background with stock options, which theoretically could be misleading, according to Android Authority.

The outlet also reported that it still need clarification on how the feature works. Vivo noted that it would allow users to change the lighting, expression, age, and even hairstyle of the subjects in the portrait.

That would basically use over-the-top augmented reality features that provide more subtle image processing improvements. It was also reported that the Chinese manufacturer has partnered with ZEISS for additional camera-related features.
