Overwatch 2 recently launched a promo where people could see the beloved WWE wrestler turned actor, John Cena. The big problem was that this led people to believe that he would be available in the game but the truth is, it was just a leaked teaser.

John Cena Speculated to Make His Way to Overwatch 2 but Rumors were Debunked

According to Polygon, despite multiple speculations, anticipations, and even trepidations that John Cena would be coming to the title, the truth is might not actually be coming to Overwatch 2 at all.

Instead, Cena was merely trying to promote Overwatch 2, which is something similar to how Megan Fox previously promoted Diablo 4 as a hype woman, as seen in a video by Forbes. Cena, on the other hand, is only promoting the upcoming expansion of the game, Invasion.

The upcoming Invasion is expected to release new maps, game type, and even a new hero, its 38th character, on August 10. As for how word of John Cena got out, it was revealed that his involvement with the game was previously teased, with multiple streamers like Scump having their broadcast corrupted and interrupted by what was dubbed as The Enigma.

No Clear Fit for John Cena in Overwatch 2 as of the Moment

As seen in the video, the character's face wasn't clear but players could still see the code on the screen. Finally, Overwatch fans started to connect the code to John Cena, due to his birthday and middle names spotted.

It was noted that the speculation was that John Cena himself would show up in Overwatch 2 either as a voice or potentially as just a skin. Blizzard has already previously done this with properties like One Punch Man and Lego.

The Potential Role for John Cena Still Doesn't Quite Fit Perfectly

However, Polygon reports that there wasn't really a good fit for John Cena, with the possible exception of what was described as the hacker Sombra, which users won't be able to see at all. She also does not match the silhouette of John Cena.

The report then highlighted that John Cena won't show up on Overwatch 2 and that fans are left to settle on Fortnite and WWE games. However, Mortal Kombat 1 will be getting Peacemaker as a guest star, which would at least provide users with a virtual Cena for the meanwhile.

The New Overwatch 2: Invasion Expansion Would Cost $15

Overwatch 2: Invasion is reportedly a major content update that Cena is reminding people of. It reportedly introduces a brand new story-driven PvE component of the game, wherein players would be battling robotic forces of the Null Sector.

The battle would be across Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, and Gothenburg and in order to get the expansion, it was noted that payers would have to shell out $15. In August, the game is still expected to get free updates like the Flashpoint game mode, a new support hero, and more.
