Mercedes-Benz has set the stage for a monumental shift in electric vehicle (EV) innovation by unveiling its "close-to-production" Concept CLA Class EV.

This four-door sedan promises an extraordinary driving experience, underpinned by a remarkably long range and lightning-fast charging capabilities, all made possible through an advanced 800-volt architecture.

Mercedes-Benz has announced that its upcoming CLA Class will focus more on efficiency and charging speeds, but can it compete with Tesla?

The Concept CLA Class EV stands as the pioneering member of Mercedes-Benz's new generation of EVs, anchored in the revolutionary Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA).

According to Engadget, this groundbreaking platform will soon witness the arrival of a shooting brake and a duo of SUVs, marking a bold step forward in electric mobility.

Although introduced as a concept at Munich's IAA Mobility motor show, the CLA Class is slated for production as a fully-fledged EV by late 2024, promising to redefine the automotive landscape

Glimpse of CLA Sedan's Features

This concept sedan, meticulously crafted, mirrors the dimensions of its fossil-fuel-powered counterpart, the CLA sedan, measuring 185 inches in length. Its sleek, aerodynamic design, resembling an elegant egg, prioritizes efficient airflow.

While some of the concept car details, such as unique wheels and LED lighting, may not make it to the production model, they exemplify Mercedes-Benz's commitment to pushing the boundaries of design.

Unlike some of its high-performance counterparts in the Mercedes-Benz EV lineup, the Concept CLA Class shines through its emphasis on efficiency and rapid charging.

With a single rear-mounted 235HP motor borrowed from the Vision EQXX concept, which incorporates "close to zero percent" rare earth materials, the CLA Class utilizes an 800-volt architecture and a cutting-edge heat pump to optimize battery performance even in cold weather conditions.

This translates to an impressive 466 miles of WLPT range (approximately 400 miles in EPA terms) and the ability to add 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

While the battery size remains undisclosed, it's likely to be under 100 kWh. Additionally, an alternative, cost-effective lithium-iron phosphate option will be offered.

Meanwhile, the interior of the Concept CLA Class boasts avant-garde features, though not all may make it to production. These include a water-cooled processor on the floor, silver-colored leather seats, an intricately engraved moonroof, and a panoramic "Superscreen" that spans the entire dashboard with minimal physical controls.

While some of these elements may be toned down in the production model, Mercedes-Benz's legacy of luxury and design will certainly shine through.

Level 3 Automation on the Horizon

The electric CLA's production model is poised to introduce Level 3 automated driving, although it won't be available at launch. All the necessary sensors will be in place, enabling future over-the-air (OTA) updates to unlock this feature.

A few months ago, Mercedes-Benz introduced OpenAI's ChatGPT integration into MBUX Voice Assistant. According to Tech Times, the beta program for this project started last June 16.
