YouTube has introduced a verification system aimed at UK-based healthcare professionals to combat the spread of medical misinformation online, according to a report by Evening Standard.
In 2021 alone, during the COVID-19 pandemic, UK users viewed health-related content on YouTube over two billion times, underlining the platform's significance as a source of healthcare information.

The newly implemented verification process grants a seal of approval to accounts run by licensed healthcare professionals who have undergone rigorous verification checks.
Dr. Vishaal Virani, Head of UK Health at YouTube, emphasized the importance of this initiative in light of the substantial number of Britons relying on the platform for healthcare guidance.
He highlighted that regardless of preferences or industry stances, people increasingly turn to online health information sources, underscoring the need for reliable and rigorously vetted content.
The verification system opened its doors to UK-based healthcare professionals with an active medical license in June.
Accounts that have sought verification now display the YouTube seal of authenticity on their videos, ensuring that users can readily identify content endorsed by qualified healthcare professionals.
Health creators in the application process undergo a comprehensive and multi-tiered verification conducted in partnership with the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the NHS. Moreover, their previous video content undergoes rigorous scrutiny, with verification withheld if any earlier uploads contained medical misinformation.

Professor Dame Helen Stokes-Lampard, Chairwoman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, commended the collaboration with YouTube and stressed the vital importance of distinguishing credible healthcare information from potentially unreliable sources.
Dame Helen noted the inherent challenge in discerning between information from reputable sources and content with questionable origins.
