Electronic Arts (EA) has taken a bold step by launching "FC 24," its latest soccer gaming installment, without the iconic FIFA tag, Reuters reports.

This departure from a nearly three-decade partnership with FIFA represents not only a seismic shift in the gaming landscape but also a calculated gamble that could redefine the future of soccer video games.

FIFA: End of an Era

The saga began last year when EA and FIFA parted ways amidst media reports of a contentious dispute over licensing costs.

FIFA, the governing body of world soccer, reportedly demanded a doubling of EA's yearly payments, totaling a staggering $150 million

The result was an unprecedented split, leaving EA's flagship soccer game without the visibility and marketing power that the FIFA brand once provided.

Joost Van Dreunen, a lecturer at NYU's Stern School of Business, sums up the situation aptly: "The end of such a high-profile partnership...creates an uncertain future for the publisher."

Both gamers, who fear a weakening of the franchise, and investors, worried about EA's revenue generation, are closely watching the outcome.

FC 24: What's Coming

To ensure that "FC 24" stands on its own, EA has introduced several innovative features. Gamers can now enjoy cross-platform play, fostering a more inclusive gaming community.

Additionally, the inclusion of HyperMotion V technology, which uses real-life footage to enhance in-game movements, promises to elevate the gaming experience to new heights.

A saving grace for "FC 24" is the enduring popularity of the Ultimate Team game mode, responsible for generating over a billion dollars in annual sales - half the game's total sales.

In Ultimate Team, players collect cards and build their virtual dream teams, creating a lucrative microtransaction ecosystem. This financial boon could not come at a better time for EA.

When it comes to the said game mode, reviewers mostly share the same view about Ultimate Team.

According to Video Games Chronicle, they say, "EA Sports FC 24 isn't the huge departure that we'd hoped for. While Ultimate Team devotees will likely be happy, the rest of the game feels like an afterthought in the transition away from the Fifa license."

Other reviewers have generally been positive. GamesRadar+ says it is "the most enjoyable FIFA - oops! - in years" and called it "a promising new beginning for the EA Sports FC series."

Metacritic gives the rebranded game a score of 77 out of 100.

While this mode has been a major selling point, it has not been without controversy. In some parts of the world, including Belgium, loot boxes have faced bans, and the UK has implemented guidelines to protect players from excessive in-game spending.

The Rebranding Unveiled

Despite the seismic change, EA promises fans that the game's essence remains intact. BBC reports that over 19,000 footballers, 700 teams, and 30 leagues are still part of the gaming experience. This commitment to realism and authenticity aims to ease the transition from FIFA to "FC 24."
