CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 has recently reached a significant milestone.

The Polish gaming powerhouse announced that its flagship title has now sold over 25 million copies worldwide.

This remarkable achievement follows closely on the heels of the release of the game's Phantom Liberty expansion and a substantial 2.0 update.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077's journey has been nothing short of tumultuous. Launched nearly three years ago to a chorus of high expectations, it was met with criticism and backlash due to a slew of bugs and performance issues, particularly on last-gen consoles.

The situation was so dire that Sony temporarily removed the game from its PlayStation Store.

However, CD Projekt Red did not throw in the towel. The 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion have transformed the game into something finally living up to its potential.

Perhaps the most telling sign of this resurgence is Steam's "very positive" aggregate score, a stark contrast to the game's initial reception. Players and fans have praised the developer for their relentless commitment to improving the game.

Phantom Liberty

Released just over a week ago, the Phantom Liberty expansion has been met with enthusiastic acclaim.

The expansion offers players a gripping spy-thriller adventure featuring the star power of Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba, two beloved actors known for their exceptional work in the film industry.

Phantom Liberty breathes new life into Night City, introducing fresh storylines, characters, and gameplay mechanics. Unsurprisingly, this expansion has garnered high praise and played a pivotal role in Cyberpunk 2077's resurgence.

Sales Expectations and Production Costs

CD Projekt Red had high expectations for Phantom Liberty, and it appears those expectations are well on track.

Reuters reports that market consensus projected sales of 3 million to 4.5 million copies for the expansion.

With its engaging storyline and revamped gameplay, players seem more than willing to dive back into the neon-soaked world of Cyberpunk 2077.

It is important to note that the production of Phantom Liberty came at a considerable cost, with CD Projekt estimating total expenditures of around 275 million zlotys ($62.81 million).

The investment, however, seems to be paying off handsomely.

What Lies Ahead

As CD Projekt Red revels in the success of Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty, the gaming community is left wondering about their future projects.

With no major new game releases planned for the next couple of years, the developer appears to be focusing on new endeavors.
