The country's seat of government, Washington D.C. is now handing out free Apple AirTags to its citizens because of the significant rise of car thefts in the district, looking to use the tech to reduce the crime. This free AirTags is now coming to citizens in selected neighborhoods in the capital city, centering on locations where car theft is on the rise for tracking their vehicle. 

Many use AirTags to protect their properties or themselves in case they get lost, especially in the many dangers of the world, not only in certain cities. 

Washington D.C. Hands Out Free AirTags to Fight Against Car Theft

WAMU reported that Washington D.C. is now turning to technology with the hopes of combatting car theft, and this is by giving away free Apple AirTags to help its residents keep tabs on their vehicles at all times. Through the Apple AirTags, residents may know the location of their cars any time of the day, and it will be available to track via any Apple device after registration. 

The program came directly from Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and said that this is free for all residents in certain neighborhoods determined by the government. 

This will center on locations with a high volume of car theft as per the city's numbers, with three different events distributing these AirTags to residents, which only requires proof of residence in the district.

Apple AirTags Helps Washington, NYC in Tracking Cars

Apple's AirTags is best known for its connection to the renowned Find My app, which requires users to utilize the iCloud service and own an Apple account to register their tracking device and connect to their devices. 

It was regarded that in these distribution events, Washington D.C. police will help its citizens place the AirTags in their vehicles. 

Apple AirTags: Its Pros and Cons 

For many years since Apple released the AirTags in 2020, it has been used to track and locate objects to give anxious users peace of mind, also centering on those who always misplace their non-electronic items. There have been wonderous stories of the Apple AirTags that helped recover stolen goods from the airport, with a certain case centering on getting back luggage with items worth $16,000. 

However, it is not all used for good. 

Some AirTags users have centered on the technology to be used for stalking people, and also, use for various crimes in which the criminals choose their victims and use the device to keep tabs on their location. May it be centering on past lovers or targets to steal from, the AirTags have as many negative features as much as what it does to help users.

Cities in the country have used AirTags to help combat car theft in their area, with the local government heading the distribution of the tech to help its residents go against this rising problem. Washington D.C. is the latest to adopt the Apple AirTags and distribute them to its residents, with the high hopes of combatting car theft and helping its citizens retrieve their stolen cars using this tracking device.
