OpenAI answered this question with its recent flex of the chatbot's numbers, claiming to have observed a massive 100 million weekly active users says its CEO Sam Altman. In the recent keynote by the executive, he did not miss out on sharing the current user base of the AI, and this is only after a year since its public availability.
Many revelations were made via OpenAI's first developers conference, a.k.a. DevDay, which also centered on the upcoming products from the company.

The OpenAI DevDay paved the way for a massive showcase by the company, but among its significant announcements here is ChatGPT's growth since it was released in December 2022. According to Altman, the AI chatbot is now seeing 100 million weekly active users, showcasing massive numbers that its technology and developments achieved for its first year.
It was regarded by a UBS study (via Reuters) in a study back in February that ChatGPT set the fastest-growing user base in the "internet space" for 20 years.
Moreover, it is still expected that ChatGPT will grow more in the coming months and years, especially with the latest offers it dropped via the event.
