Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has raised the possibility of Sam Altman, recently ousted from his role as OpenAI's CEO, returning to the organization. Altman, who announced his intention to join a newly-formed AI research team at Microsoft, might have the option to reconsider his move, according to a report by TechCrunch.

Will Altman Return to OpenAI
During interviews with CNBC and Bloomberg TV, Nadella indicated a willingness to consider Altman's return to OpenAI. On CNBC, Nadella said that they hope Altman and Greg find a fitting place if they don't continue with OpenAI. When questioned about the likelihood of Altman returning, Nadella deferred the decision to OpenAI's board, management, and employees.
Nadella's remarks align with recent reports suggesting that Altman's move to Microsoft is still under consideration. The dynamics at OpenAI have shifted with changes in leadership, and Altman's potential return depends on the support of two out of the remaining three board members.
This corresponds with earlier reports indicating the possibility of Altman rejoining OpenAI.
Nadella also highlighted Microsoft's interest in seeing adjustments to OpenAI's governance, especially in terms of investor relations. As a nonprofit organization, OpenAI's board currently lacks seats for investors, including Microsoft.
Nadella said that there is a need for governance changes and expressed Microsoft's commitment to engaging in discussions with OpenAI's board to facilitate these adjustments as the situation evolves.
Microsoft's Intention to Hire Altman
This development comes after Nadella expressed Microsoft's intention to hire Altman and other members of the former OpenAI CEO's team. Altman's role at Microsoft will involve leading a team dedicated to advanced AI research.
Altman's termination from OpenAI sent shockwaves through the tech industry, leading to notable departures and investor pressure to reinstate him.
Despite the mounting pressure, OpenAI's board defended its decision, citing concerns about Altman's behavior and alleged lack of transparency.
